Photo Walk #104 : Thiruvanmiyur

Thiruvanmiyur is one of the large modern residential neighborhood in South of Chennai. The name Thiruvanmiyur is derived from Thiru-Valmiki-Ur, marking the location of the Sage Valmiki temple, said to be 1300 yrs old, which will also mark our starting point. We’ll walk through Arulmigu Marundheeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, venture into lanes of neighborhood and finish our walk at the beautiful Thiruvalluvar Nagar Beach.

Starting point: Valmiki Siddhar Jeevasamathi Kovil – Start of ECR road (near Thiruvanmiyur Bus Depot)

Parking: Try to park near Marundeeswarar Temple or close to End point of the walk (Thiruvanmiyur Beach or 1st Avenue Road leading from Thiruvanmiyur RTO from ECR road)

Interesting information:

1. Arulmigu Marundheeswarar Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva is said to be 1000 – 2000 yrs old. Lord Shiva has taught Sage Agasthiar about medicinal qualities of herbs (“marundhu” in Tamil), hence the name Marundheeswarar. Sage Valmiki is said to have worshiped Lord Shiva in this shrine to correct his past life as a robber. This temple is rich in history.


2. Sage Valmiki Temple: The temple is said to be around 1300 yrs old. It is a small temple that lies in the middle of the ECR road. It is built in honor of the sage who visited here to worship Lord Marundheeswarar.
